Krok Duean Ha Petrified Forest Park

The park area is 1.6 hectares (10 rai) on the grounds of the Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified Wood & Mineral Resources, Krok Duean Ha Village, Suranaree Sub-district, Mueang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. This park was established in 1998. The current forest is a deciduous dipterocarp forest on the gravel terrace of the antecedent stream. Approximately 10 large petrified trunks were found in situ in the park along with many smaller pieces of petrified wood.  The age is Pleistocene or Pliocene, possibly 800,000 years.  The fossil trees include Cynometra, Terminalia, Irvingia, Mangifera, and Canarium, as well as many others not yet classified. The area was originally a deciduous dipterocarp forest.  Approximately 7 to 8 meters of sand and gravel were removed for road and runway construction and other purposes. The site was a community forest before the establishment of the park.
