Ban Yuan Chaloemraja Cultural Center and Market

This site is the source of Thai crafts that have been affiliated with the way of life of Tai Yuan (or Northern Thai) people in Sikhio District for nearly 200 years. In the past, the ancestors of these Northern Thai people lived in Chiang Saen city at the northern border of Thailand which was called “Yonok City”. However, because of fighting between Thais and Burmese, who came to seize Chiang Saen city, one group of Northern Thais were move to and settled in Saraburi and Chanthuek, or present-day Sikhio. These Northern Thais inherited and preserved the traditions, customs, and arts of their Northern Thai ancestors.  Some examples are their spoken language and the craft of weaving, especially the weaving of Pha Nung (cloth wrapped around the body), referred to as Pha Sin by Northern Thai. Weaving is practiced within individual families, and the cloth produced is known as Pha Yuan, meaning the cloth of Tai-Yuan people.  The cloth is identified as being cotton cloth of good quality, tight weaving, and having nonfading colors, such as red, yellow, green, light blue, blue, and brown. The patterns are detailed and beautiful.
