Khorat Global Geopark Empowers "Citizen Scientists" Using Technology to Monitor Biodiversity Amidst Climate Change
From March 30 to April 1, 2026, Khorat UNESCO Global Geopark, the Petrified Wood Research Institute, Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University (NRRU), hosted the workshop "Community Skill Enhancement for Biodiversity Conservation and Management under Climate Change in Khorat Geopark." This initiative, funded by NRRU, aims to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and community action across five key districts.
The event featured a distinguished panel of experts: Asst. Prof. Dr. Pratuang Jintasakul, Dr. Nareerat Boonchai, Dr. Lalita Piarat, Ms. Krongkaew Janjitpaibool, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Onuma Prachpreecha, moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Wilailuck Naksri.
A core highlight of this workshop was the focus on technology-driven fieldwork. Participants were trained in biodiversity survey techniques using digital tools and mobile applications to document local flora and fauna at actual Geosites. This transition empowers local youth, teachers, and residents to become "Citizen Scientists," capable of systematic environmental monitoring and climate action.
By leveraging technology, the community can now contribute high-quality data to global databases, providing essential insights for managing natural heritage and mitigating the impacts of climate change. This hands-on training took place across all five districts of the Geopark—Mueang, Sung Noen, Sikhio, Kham Thale So, and Chaloem Phra Kiat—ensuring that the protection of earth heritage is driven by local communities.

“workshop for Khorat Geopark's Interpreters ”

Khorat UNESCO Global Geopark, the Khorat Fossil Museum, Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University, organized workshop for Khorat Geopark's Interpreters on March 26–27, 2026. The event was held at the Sirindhorn Building, Khorat Fossil Museum, to prepare interpreters for the upcoming UNESCO Global Geopark Revalidation Mission later this year.
This initiative follows the holistic cooperation model based on UNESCO guidelines, with support from the Environmental Fund and Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University. It integrates collaboration between the public and private sectors, academia, and local communities across five districts: Mueang, Sung Noen, Sikhio, Kham Thale So, and Chaloem Phra Kiat, with over 100 local representatives and youth in attendance.
The workshop focused on integrated data management, where stakeholders shared progress on geopark initiatives within their respective areas. Geological, natural, and cultural data were compiled to co-design presentation strategies aligned with the revalidation goals. A key highlight was the English communication training, aimed at empowering site interpreters to present effectively and independently. Furthermore, primary coordinators for each site were designated through mutual consensus.
This two-day training emphasized establishing Best Practices to ensure that everyone within the Khorat UNESCO Global Geopark territory operates as a unified team with a shared vision. This collective readiness ensures we serve as exceptional hosts while fostering long-term sustainability for the region.
